This does not necessarily mean that every component must be the exact part originally fitted to the car. Depending on the vehicle and its history, a suitable original or period-correct replacement may be the most appropriate solution. Materials, construction methods and mechanical systems can be very different, while original components may be extremely difficult to source or reproduce.

Mechanical Restoration and Technical Preparation

A classic car can have beautiful coachwork and still require significant mechanical work.

Our mechanical restoration services can include work on engines, gearboxes, carburettors, cooling systems, brakes, suspension, steering and electrical systems. Depending on the vehicle, mechanical components may be repaired, rebuilt or completely overhauled.

For cars that are intended to be driven regularly or used for long-distance touring and historic rallies, reliability and drivability are particularly important.

Coachwork and Body Restoration

The body of a classic car often requires specialist craftsmanship. Older vehicles may feature hand-formed panels, traditional construction methods and materials that are no longer used in modern automotive production.

Coachwork and body restoration can include repairing existing panels, traditional metalwork, fabrication of replacement sections and, where necessary, the reconstruction of components that are no longer available. The objective is not simply to produce a visually perfect body. Panel shape, shut lines, construction details and the relationship between the body and chassis all contribute to the authenticity of the finished car.

Body-Off Restoration

For some vehicles, a body-off restoration is the most appropriate approach.

During a body-off restoration, the body is separated from the chassis, allowing the chassis, underside of the body and other normally inaccessible components to be inspected in detail. This can provide an opportunity to address structural issues, corrosion and mechanical components that would otherwise be difficult to reach. A body-off restoration is a substantial undertaking and is not necessarily appropriate for every classic car. Heritage Cars can assess the condition of the vehicle and advise whether a complete body-off restoration or a more sympathetic approach would be appropriate.
