Better known as the Matra Jet 6 SS, this final and fastest example of the nimble French sports car steals the show anywhere, anytime. Twenty years ago the current owner found the car as a project in the US. The car was complete, as was its history. The Sun Yellow Matra was purchased by an American Soldier who was stationed in Germany at the Autosalon de Paris in 1968 and brought back home after service. The final American owner started the restoration by dismantling the car, but stopped at exactly that point in the process. Which is quite fortunate, because this kept the car and all its mechanical parts in original condition, despite being in boxes.
During the rebuild every detail was brought back at the highest level. The builder, a Dutch engineer by degree, was known as an amateur race car driver in the Netherlands, driving formula cars. His profession and racing background helped to set up a very capable Matra during the restoration process itself and the years afterwards. He enjoyed to drive this car. Took it to car events in France, where he took credits for his beloved “Djet”. Only some local Matra club member were green with envy.
The wide arches and the sporty 1.3 Litre Renault-Gordini engine set this (D)Jet apart from the rest. It has the same specs as an Alpine A110, but benefits from a better rear suspension with wishbones. The SS version is also homologated by the FIA and can be used not just as a sports car but for historic racing and rallying too, although this example hasn’t been used as such. The car pulls strong from its 1255 cc crossflow engine. It is a joyful lightweight sports car for the street and the next custodian should really take it on road trips or weekly drives through the mountains, canyons or other great driving routes.
The car comes with a vast amount of documents from day one till date. The restoration itself is well documented too. Altogether it will be difficult to find another example of the Jet 6 SS in the same condition that is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
