Glossary term

Boxer Engine

A boxer engine is a type of internal combustion engine in which the cylinders are arranged horizontally on opposite sides of the crankshaft. The pistons move in opposite directions. The term “boxer engine” refers to the movement of the opposing pistons, which resembles two boxers throwing punches towards each other.

The low and wide construction of a boxer engine gives it a low centre of gravity, which can contribute to the handling characteristics of a car. Boxer engines are also known for their smooth operation and good balance. One disadvantage is that the engine is relatively wide, which can make certain components more difficult to access during maintenance.

Boxer engines are particularly associated with Porsche and Subaru, but the principle has been used in automotive engineering since the late nineteenth century. A number of interesting boxer engines can also be found in the world of classic cars.

Maintaining or restoring a classic car with a boxer engine requires an understanding of its specific construction. The horizontal cylinder layout can affect access to components, cooling and certain maintenance procedures.
