Magneto

A magneto is a mechanically driven electrical generator that uses permanent magnets to generate electricity. In classic cars, a magneto was often used as part of the ignition system. The magneto itself generates the electrical voltage needed to produce a spark at the spark plugs.

A key advantage of a magneto is that the ignition system does not rely on a battery. The magneto is driven directly by the engine and, while the engine is running, supplies the electrical energy needed for ignition.

Magneto ignition was widely used in early cars and remained in use in some sports and race cars. This technology is particularly common in pre-war cars. In older cars, a properly functioning magneto can therefore be essential for engine reliability and starting.

A magneto is technically different from a conventional ignition system with a battery, coil, and distributor. When restoring a pre-war car, it is therefore important to understand the specific operation and adjustment of this type of ignition.
