Matching Numbers

“Matching numbers” means that the major mechanical components of a classic car, such as the engine and gearbox, correspond with the numbers originally assigned to the chassis by the manufacturer. Depending on the make and model, these numbers may be verified through factory records, build sheets or other historical documentation.

Matching numbers can be important when assessing the originality, historical significance and market value of a classic car. However, their importance and the way they are documented varies between manufacturers, models and periods. In some cases, a car may retain its original engine, while in others the factory documentation may show that a different engine was fitted at a later stage in the car’s history.

When buying or restoring a classic car, it is therefore important to look beyond the numbers themselves and also consider the car’s history, documentation and overall technical condition.

As part of an inspection, we can assess the technical condition of the car and, where possible, check the numbers of the engine, gearbox and other relevant components against available documentation. This gives a prospective buyer a better understanding of the car before purchase, including whether the car appears to retain its matching numbers and whether further investigation may be required.
