Recommissioning a classic car means carefully bringing a vehicle back into safe and reliable running condition after it has been stored, parked or unused for an extended period. The aim is not simply to get the engine running again, but to make sure the entire car is safe and suitable for use on public roads.

Getting a classic car roadworthy may be necessary after a long period of inactivity, following the purchase of a car that has been standing for some time, or after a restoration. Depending on the condition and history of the vehicle, recommissioning can involve a thorough inspection, routine maintenance, replacing fluids, checking the fuel and electrical systems, servicing the brakes and suspension, and inspecting the engine, cooling system and carburettors.

With an older car, it is particularly important to look beyond whether the engine starts and runs. Brakes, steering, tyres, suspension, fuel lines, electrical components and other safety-critical parts all need to be checked to ensure that the car can be driven safely and reliably.
