Youngtimer

A “youngtimer” is a relatively young classic car that is older than a modern used car but is not yet considered a traditional classic car. In the Netherlands, the term is usually used for cars manufactured between 1986 and 2010. In 2027, the requirements for qualifying under the youngtimer regulation will change.

FIVA applies a specific historical definition to a “youngtimer”: a vehicle between 20 and 29 years old that is in good condition, has been maintained in a historically accurate manner, and is generally used for recreational purposes. According to this classification, a vehicle 30 years or older can be considered a historic vehicle.

Youngtimers are appealing because many models from this period still drive relatively modernly, while at the same time gaining increasing historical and collector’s value. Think, for example, of unique sports cars, luxury cars, and models with distinctive technical or design features from the 1980s and 1990s.

When maintaining a youngtimer, in addition to mechanical wear and tear, factors such as electronics, rubber components, plastic parts, and outdated fuel and electrical systems also play an important role. A thorough technical inspection can therefore help keep a youngtimer reliable and in good condition.
